Solution 1: From the QuickBooks Tool Hub, run the QuickBooks Install Diagnostic tool

Step 1: Download and install the QuickBooks Tool Hub

The QuickBooks Tool Hub helps fix common errors. The tool hub requires you to close QuickBooks. We recommend using Tool Hub on Windows 10, 64-bit for the best experience.

  • Close QuickBooks.
  • Install the most recent version (1.6.0.3) of the QuickBooks Tool Hub. Save the file somewhere you can find it easily (like your Downloads folder or your Windows desktop).
  • Open the file you downloaded (QuickBooksToolHub.exe).
  • Install the application and accept its terms and conditions by following the on-screen instructions.
  • Double-click the tool hub icon on your Windows desktop after the installation is complete.

Note: If you can’t find the icon, search for QuickBooks Tool Hub in Windows and select it.

Step 2: From the Tool Hub, run the Quickbooks Install Diagnostic tool

QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool automatically diagnoses and fixes issues with Microsoft components used by the program.
Open the QuickBooks Tool Hub.

  1. In the tools hub, select Installation Issues.
  2. Select QuickBooks Install Diagnostic Tool. Let the tool run. It can take up to 20 minutes.
  3. When the tool finishes, restart your computer and open QuickBooks.
  4. All is well if you can open and work in QuickBooks.

Continue to Solution 2 if Error 1904 persists.

Solution 2: Manually fix Windows components

You can repair specific Windows components yourself if QBInstall and the update don’t fix the error.

However, you should only perform these troubleshooting steps if you’re an IT professional, a confident Windows user, or working with Microsoft support.

  • Repair or reinstall Microsoft .NET Framework
  • Repair Microsoft MSXML

If you can install and open QuickBooks, you’re good to go. If you still see problems, move on to Solution 3.

Switch to your Windows Administrator account

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Type “CMD” into the search. Right-click the CMD Run icon and select Run as administrator.
  3. Type “net user administrator /active: yes” in the command window and press Enter. Close the command window once the command has been completed.
  4. Open the Windows Start menu and select Sign Out.
  5. Sign in with the account that says Administrator.

Change your user permissions

  1. Open the Windows Start menu.
  2. Open File Explorer by typing “File Explorer” into the search box.
  3. Search for C:\Program Files\Common Files.
  4. Select Properties from the right-click menu of the Common Files folder.
  5. Select Edit from the Security tab.
  6. In the “Group or user names” section, select Users.
  7. In the “Permissions for Users” section, turn on the following permissions: Modify, Read & execute, List folder contents, Read, Write. This is an image of your permissions for common files for your Windows operating system. You will need to set them for the Users group.
  8. Select Apply and then OK.

Reinstall QuickBooks and sign out

  1. Follow these steps if you need detailed instructions for installing QuickBooks Desktop. This shouldn’t impact any existing company file data.
  2. When the installation is finished, open the Windows Start menu and sign out of the administrator account.
  3. Sign in to your usual user account.
  4. Open the Windows Start menu.
  5. Type “CMD” into the search. Right-click on the CMD Run icon and select Run as administrator. Type “net user administrator /active: no” in the command window and press Enter. This hides your administrator account.
  6. If you can open QuickBooks with your regular account, you’re good to go.
